Licensing for this repository
=============================

This repository publishes detection reports built from wildlife media feeds that
belong to other people. One licence does not fit all of it, so there are three
answers rather than one.

1. Original material
--------------------

Prose, methodology, charts of our own results, and the structure of the reports
are licensed:

Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)
    https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Attribution: Cascadia Listening Post, https://github.com/rain-Brian/wildlife-detections

2. Individual reports
---------------------

A report built from a feed whose licence imposes terms carries those terms
instead, and it carries the most restrictive obligation of any feed that
contributed to it.

The effective licence for each report is recorded in that report's `report.json`
under `license`, and shown on the report page itself. It is computed from the
upstream rights rather than chosen, so read it there and not here.

In particular: any report built from Orcasound hydrophone audio is licensed
**CC BY-NC-SA 4.0**, because Orcasound licenses its material under
Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 and share-alike carries into derived
work. Such a report may not be used commercially without permission from
Orcasound (info@orcasound.net).

3. Site code
------------

The small amount of HTML, CSS and JavaScript shipped with the reports is licensed
under the MIT Licence. See LICENSE-CODE.

4. Upstream media
-----------------

Frames, clips, audio and spectrograms are derived from feeds that remain the
property of their owners. Each report credits its sources, and NOTICE lists them
for the site as a whole. NOTICE is generated from the feed registry and is not
edited by hand.

Nothing here grants any right in the underlying feeds. If you want to reuse the
source media rather than our reports, go to the source.
