Why this report replaces earlier figures
Sunrise Mountain, August 2026 counted 9,956 raw detections and 347 review candidates and featured 2 human-reviewed animals. Those figures came from MegaDetector reading each 1,920 by 1,080 frame after it had been shrunk to 640 by 640 pixels. At that size a black bear crossing this meadow is roughly 40 pixels across, while the fence at the right edge of the frame is barely affected, so the detector reported the fence on most frames and animals on very few. The black bear pair of 21 August, recorded there as a gap in the scene filter, produced no detection at all.
This report reprocesses every frame from 6 August 2026 to 10 September 2026 with the same MegaDetector weights at 1,280 by 1,280 pixels, sends each box the scene filter did not establish as fixed furniture to SpeciesNet with its Washington geofence, and routes on the label SpeciesNet returns. Named species are shown below. People, vehicles, empty ground and the fence are counted and not shown. The earlier report is left as it was published, with a notice pointing here.
What the 1,028 candidates were
| SpeciesNet said | Candidates |
|---|---|
| A named species, shown below | 53 |
| Excluded by hand, with the reason given below | 1 |
| A person, counted and not shown | 475 |
| An unnamed animal, counted and not shown | 59 |
| Empty ground or a fixed object, counted and not shown | 440 |
| A vehicle, counted and not shown | 0 |
From 46,494 frames, 17,693 were too dark to carry information and were skipped. MegaDetector reported 85,454 detections in the rest, and the scene filter set 84,215 aside as fixed objects recurring at the same pixels.
Read these labels with care
- SpeciesNet labelled 7 crops white-tailed deer. Deer at Sunrise are black-tailed deer, a subspecies of mule deer, and 7 of those 7 fall in sightings that also carry mule deer labels. The geofence cannot catch this, because white-tailed deer do occur elsewhere in Washington.
- The earlier report records two black bears together in the 21 August frame. This run drew one box there, around the larger bear.
- Unnamed animal labels are counted and not shown. When a sample of them was checked, most were people crouched at work.
- Excluded by hand: the red fox label on 2026-08-14 18:51:39 UTC. The crop shows a person at work in the meadow, not a fox.

Coverage
36 camera-days with frames, 6 August 2026 to 10 September 2026. 3 days captured noticeably fewer frames than a typical day, so a quiet day there may mean a camera that was not recording: 6 August 2026 (453 frames), 8 August 2026 (472 frames) and 11 August 2026 (443 frames).
